I think design is the work of amplifying what you notice or what flashes through your mind, and giving it a form.
Sometimes I feel designing a house is a little like searching for a partner in marriage.
Just as a partner isn't decided by conditions alone, a house isn't decided by performance and conditions alone either. Put plainly: I want to treasure the felt sense.
When meeting people, the first impression — the moment of sizing each other up — matters a great deal. The same applies when designing or choosing a house: the first impression really does matter.
I often tell clients to treasure their intuition. Intuition doesn't come out of nowhere. It arises in a moment of recognition, welling up from what the person has experienced and seen — things unconsciously internal that surface suddenly.
It feels wrong to dismiss that with the word "arbitrary." Intuition, after all, is something in which some strong personal will is at work.
