When Japanese speakers describe «l'art de vivre», they often translate it as “the art of living” — meaning fine arts, aesthetics. We think this is slightly off. In French, the word art originally carries the sense of skill, craft, method.
The French art descends from Latin ars, which belongs to the same family as Greek technē. Its original meaning is “skill, craft, method, way” — a world distinct from what we usually picture when we hear “art” today.
So l'art de vivre, more accurately, means “the craft of living” or “a way of life”. The studio name L'art de vie inherits this. It may look artistic, but tracing back to its root, it is a word centered on craft.
L'art de vivre originates in Renaissance France. It is a philosophy of relating to food, dwelling, people, and time with care, precision, and longevity.
An overlooked core: in French culture this concept has always been inseparable from savoir-faire (artisanal mastery, technical know-how). Haute cuisine, haute couture, winemaking, architecture — every domain we call “careful, beautiful living” requires high technique. In French culture, craft is the foundation of life.
In other words, l'art de vivre is not about admiring surface beauty. It refers to “the way of living, backed by craft.”
At the heart of our work is structural calculation, thermal calculation, Passive House design, and BIM — the modern savoir-faire of architecture. Without sound numbers, a safe and comfortable home cannot exist.
Yet the purpose of that craft is not the numbers themselves. Our craft is ultimately directed at designing how someone lives — the time spent with family, the way one moves through the house, growing into a home over decades.
We chose L'art de vie as a name that does not separate craft from life. Neither tilted toward art nor toward technique alone — both are already contained in this one phrase.
Our stance
Never leave the craft behind.
Never lose the life from sight.
Don't sever numbers and drawings from life. Conversely, don't skip the craft when speaking of life. L'art de vie is our shorthand for keeping both in mind.
