Starting in 2020, new houses will be required to meet the energy-saving standard.
It's not widely known, but the standard is loose enough that you can clear it even with aluminum windows and no foundation insulation. It's not strict at all.
My worry is that once this becomes mandatory, a culture takes hold that says "as long as you clear this, you're fine." I want to believe that smart consumers will ask for higher performance.
